Allowing students to give 🔥 is a great way to get students engaged in Slack and MS Teams. But sometimes, students will game the system by forming a 🔥 alliance where they only give 🔥 to their friends. To help prevent this, ClassCred applies a gift tax to 🔥s given to the same person in a week. In this post, we will explain how to implement gift taxes:
How gift taxes work
By default, ClassCred applies a 50% gift tax to more than15 🔥s given to the same person in a week and a 90% tax to every 🔥 over 20.
Example
Suppose a student was given 22 🔥s by the same student in a given week. Points would be awarded as follows:
Tax Bracket | Tax Rate | 🔥s Received | Tax | Points Earned |
0 -15 | 0% | 15 | 0 | 15 |
16 - 20 | 50% | 5 | 2.5 | 2.5 |
21 - 22 | 90% | 2 | 1.8 | 0.2 |
Total | | 22 | 4.3 | 17.7 |
Students are notified if their 🔥 is taxed on their activity feed.
How to adjust gift taxes
The default gift tax rates are very conservative and will only tax the most egregious gaming offenses. You can adjust the brackets and rates as follows:
Step 1: Go to Rewards in the ClassCred app
Step 2: Select Fire and then Gift Tax
Step 3: Adjust your brackets and tax rates.
By default, fire is never taxed when given by an instructor. Checking, Applies to instructors, will apply gift taxes to instructor fire. Checking this box is useful if you would like to test the Gift Tax feature.
How to disable gift taxes
If you would like to disable Gift Taxes you can do so by changing the Reward Status to Disabled.
